Students are equipped with a multifaceted, personal understanding of plants and are empowered to bridge the gap between traditional herbalism and modern science.

  • A hands-on curriculum. You’ll be equipped with real-world skills in evaluating and maintaining quality control of herbs, thus preparing you for direct employment in the herbal products field.
  • A 44-hour practicum. Applicable experience will help you transition confidently into the workforce, providing a valuable interface with herbal manufacturers, growers, wildcrafting experts, practitioners and researchers.
  • State-of-the-art herb garden & teaching greenhouse. The Bastyr Gardens feature more than 350 species of herbs from Western, Chinese, Ayurvedic and First Nations traditions. The campus gardens and greenhouse gives you the opportunity to grow herbs year-round, harvest herbs for classroom study or to make herbal products, and even to fulfill relevant work-study hours.
  • An on-campus botanical medicine lab. Hone your skills in herbal medicine making through hands-on practice in a lab environment. 
  • Innovative classes. Classes such as Ethnobotany Northwest Herbs and Herbs and Food, give you plenty of exposure to various methodologies and diverse thinking.
  • Study abroad options. A variety of study abroad/away options are available in Costa Rica, Italy and the U.S.

The Bachelor of Science in Herbal Sciences is a bachelor’s degree completion program, specifically developed for students who have already started their undergraduate degree. Entering students will have completed the equivalent of two years of college coursework before enrolling. Bastyr enrolls new degree-seeking students for the Fall Quarter entry.

Prerequisites

  • Completion of the equivalent of two years of college coursework
  • 2.5 cumulative GPA
  • Grade of C or better in all basic proficiency and science requirement courses
  • 90 quarter credits (60 semester credits), including a minimum number of credits in the basic proficiency, science and general education categories
